Controversies

  1. Accusations of Anti-Catholicism: During the spring semester of 2009, the Bull fell on hard times due to a Steve Allinger allusion. In an attempt to repent, staff members, namely Andrew Peart and Tom Lewek, included their confirmation names (e.g. Thomas John Stanislaus Lewek) on the masthead. This upset many Hamilton employees, especially Judy at McEwen, who claimed that the publication had adopted an anti-Catholic tone.
  2. Accusations of Anti-Semitism: A 2008 satirical piece, written by Tom Lewek and Apolon, on notorious fascist Ezra Pound's first writing conference featured the phrase "usurious Jew-face" and became a lightning rod of controversy. Several prominent faculty members, however, came to the Bull's defense.
